Historical background
Within the state’s efforts to develop the industrial sector, and the best way to achieve the objectives of long term economic development, and based on the importance of diversifying the sources of national income, and creating business friendly environment in Oman and employment opportunities for the citizens and to exploit local raw materials, in 1983 the government initiated the first industrial estate in Oman – the Authority for Rusayl Industrial Estate – which was inaugurated in 1985, in the capital area.

This was followed by several other estates in Sohar (Al batina), Raysut (Dhofar), Nizwa (Al Dakhliya), Sur (Sur) and Bureimi (Bureimi) in addition to Samail Industrial Estate which was announced in 2010.

In 1993 PEIE was established in response to the expanding industrial estates, by the Royal decree No: 4/93, with the objective of planning, establishing, managing and developing the industrial estates across Oman. Currently, in addition to the industrial estates, PEIE also manages one IT park – Knowledge Oasis Muscat (KOM), and Al Mazunah Free Zone. The total area of the estates is around 88.300 million square meters.
