Technologies for the Differently Abled which is also known as Assistive Technology is a fairly new term, but the basic idea is not. Some adaptive devices are as simple as the cane others seem a bit more complicated. A point noteworthy is that all these technological improvements are a testament to human determination; creativity and ambition; that help challenged persons lead full and fulfilling lives.
This special Digital Nation event focuses on the important community issues, innovative solutions to societal challenges being faced and making an impact through technology. By empowering people with disabilities (PWDs) to be successful, one automatically brings that perspective to work and uses it to create great outcomes.
With the aging baby boomer generation, there is a huge market gap for companies to tap into – in fact as per WHO statistics there are more than 1.2 billion people worldwide with some type of disability, Oman alone has around 90,000 people.
This platform will give room to create an environment where people can be honest and self-identify their disability or of those that they are aware of and discover what can be done and what they need to do to be successful.
Knowledge Oasis Muscat (KOM), the technical arm of the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (PEIE) is pleased to invite you and your colleagues to attend the above mentioned seminar which will be held at Crown Plaza Hotel – Muscat on Wednesday, 13th of May, 2015 at 10 am.
Objective of the Seminar:
1) Assistive Technology and Rehabilitative Technology : Deciding which type of rehabilitative technology would be most useful to help a person and basically helps to restore function in people who have faced / developed disability as a result of disease , injury or aging . These are usually designed by doctors, patient’s families, special education teachers, speech language pathologists, rehabilitation engineers, occupational therapists and other specialists including representatives from companies that manufacture or assist in the manufacturing of such technology.
2) Technology available: This sections main objective is to highlight the technology available in Oman that could be used to aid PWD’s. Also the research and development that is currently going on in the country with regard to improvements; future course of action / plans that have been made / should be made for the betterment of PWD’s in our community. What help can be received from groups that are set up for PWD’s.
