A series of events in line with the Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW 2017) kicked off at the National Business Centre (NBC) in the Knowledge Oasis Muscat (KOM) yesterday (Monday). The events, which also come in line with the Sultanate’s celebrations of the 47th Glorious National Day, are organised by NBC which pertains to the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (PEIE), in cooperation with the Public Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Riyada).

Speaking at the opening event, Mulkie Al Hashmi, director of marketing at NBC, said, “NBC is organising GEW Oman for the fifth consecutive year to instill the culture of entrepreneurship in the Sultanate and disseminate awareness on entrepreneurship among the business owners in the country. We have to point out that the National Business Centre is an initiative launched by the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates in KOM to offer promising Omani entrepreneurs a platform to develop their business ideas and advance them into growing ventures. The centre aims at becoming the premier platform for Omani entrepreneurs by providing a lineup of facilities for the entrepreneurs.”

Nasra Al Adawi of Xeem Company, organiser of GEW first day workshop highlighting risk management, pointed out that the company believes that the effective implementation of international standards and practices help equip SMEs to meet emerging challenges through innovative and practical solutions to enable a healthy and sustainable economy.

Moderated by Alex Sidorenko, CEO of Risk Academy, the Risk Management Workshop highlighted that SMEs are often most exposed to effects of certain types of risk, as a result of limited resources and issues beyond their control. Evidence reveals that only half of all SMEs make it beyond their fifth year, which suggests that running a successful business requires managing risks effectively. “Making a commitment to better understand and manage risk is therefore essential to helping SMEs survive and grow sustainably,” Sidorenko emphasised.

The Risk Management Workshop aimed at discussing how SMEs should forecast and manage risk appropriately, given certain resource limitations; learning to choose the right tools in the execution of your strategy and decision-making; overcoming the myth of managing risk is only for large organisations, and considering implementing formal risk management processes for your business; learning from SMEs case studies and practices, and getting acquainted with practical risk management tips for SMEs.

Today (Tuesday), the GEW 2017 events will continue as Mashura session will be held at Riyada. The session will feature officials from the Public Authority for Investment Promotion and Export Development (Ithraa) and Export Credit Guarantee Agency of Oman (Credit Oman). It should be noted that Mashura initiative aspires at raising awareness on the entrepreneurial environment among the entrepreneurs and introduce them to government and private important procedures.

As part of the GEW 2017 events, NBC will organise tomorrow (Wednesday) Reyooq event at the Knowledge Oasis Muscat, which will highlight adventure tourism. The event will feature Hasan Al Lawati and Adil Al Abri who will share their experiences and the challenges faced by adventure tourism. Sponsored by Ooredoo, the series events of Reyooq aspire to present an ultimate platform for Omani entrepreneurs to network with experts, and learn about entrepreneurship to get innovative and creative ideas for their businesses.

Startup Weekend

On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the main GEW 2017 event called ‘Startup Weekend’ programme will be held. Startup Weekend is a global programme that connects entrepreneurs, organising teams, and startup communities around the world. Startup Weekend is a 54-hour weekend event that will kick off on the 16th of November at 17.00 pm at NBC in the Knowledge Oasis Muscat. Around 20 consultants and experts in entrepreneurship will take part in this event. The event aims at promoting communication between the participants and exchange views. Each participant will come up with an idea during the programme and the best idea from each group will be voted for. The programme will conclude with the selection of three most viable and cost-effective ideas. Winners will receive gifts as well as will get the opportunity to join pre-incubation and incubation phases.

It should be noted that the purpose of Global Entrepreneurship Week is to connect experts and entrepreneurs to unleash their ideas and transform innovative ideas into reality. GEW takes place in more than 140 countries worldwide and the National Business Centre is privileged to host this initiative for the fifth consecutive year.
